Athens

Building the first Ethical City

Athens is where the model moves into practice: the partnerships, the local capacity, the programmes and the civic place through which philosophy becomes part of everyday life again.

2. WHY ATHENS

Philosophy belongs in the life of the city.

Athens offers something unusual: the philosophical heritage from which this work grows, an active contemporary community around that tradition, and the relationships through which we can begin testing the model in real life.

It is also a contemporary European city, with universities, neighbourhoods, cultural institutions, businesses and the pressures of modern urban life. If philosophy still has a civic role, its relevance has to be demonstrated in the present, not in the past.

We are not arriving with philosophy. Athens has philosophers, universities and civic organisations of its own.

What we bring is a tested way of building philosophical communities, and the intention to create a civic environment that does not currently exist here. Within a defined period, the work in Athens should be led and programmed by people from the city.

3. THE CONTEMPORARY AGORA

Centro visual de la página. Fotografía o imagen cívica/arquitectónica a gran escala. La primera frase ahora dice qué es físicamente, sin revelar ubicación, modelo de concesión ni cifras. Un donante debe poder saber que financia un lugar real.

A civic home for philosophy

The Contemporary Agora will be a physical, publicly accessible place in Athens: part meeting place, part school, part cultural space, open to anyone who walks in.

People should not need to go looking for philosophy. They should be able to encounter it — through public conversation, cultural activity, learning, and ordinary time spent in a shared place.

It is also where different parts of Athens can meet. A neighbourhood association and a university department rarely share a room. Here they would.

A stable civic home lets people return, and relationships accumulate.

4. WHAT WE ARE BUILDING

Cuatro módulos compactos, reutilizando el ritmo visual del carrusel del mockup antiguo (no su contenido).

From a civic idea to a living institution.

Partnerships — Relationships with universities, cultural and civic institutions, companies and other local and international partners.

Local capacity — Greek-language resources, facilitators trained in Athens, and local participation, so that the project belongs to the city rather than visiting it.

Programmes — The first community, educational, leadership and personal-development pathways.

Contemporary Agora — The functional and institutional pathway towards a stable civic home that brings the different dimensions of Ethical Cities together.

5. WHERE WE ARE NOW

Where we are now

Completed — Ethical Cities Network established in Belgium (2026). Philosophical Advisory Circle formed. Model developed and tested through seven years of practice in Madrid.

In progress — Conversations with Athenian universities, cultural and civic institutions. Greek-language capacity. Design of the first programmes.

Ahead — Through June 2027: partnerships, funding, Greek-language materials and facilitator preparation. From July 2027: the first full year of Ethical Cities in Athens, with the Contemporary Agora advancing in parallel.

Help build Athens

Creating the first Ethical City takes collaboration across philosophy, education, culture, civic life, research, philanthropy, business and urban development.

We welcome conversations with people and institutions able to contribute knowledge, resources, partnerships or practical capacity.

7. CLOSING

The first, not the only.

Athens is where Ethical Cities will learn what this model can become in practice.

What proves valuable here can inform future Ethical Cities — not copied, but adapted and locally owned in response to different cultures, communities and realities.
